Laura Schawelka (*1988 in Munich) lives and works in Berlin and Los Angeles. She studied at the Staatliche Hochschule für Bildende Künste, Städelschule in Frankfurt as a master student under Tobias Rehberger and afterwards received her Master of Fine Arts at the California Institute of the Arts. Receiving numerous awards and scholarships, she worked in Paris in 2017 as a artist in residence at the Cité des Arts Paris with the Hessische Kulturstiftung and in 2019 she won the Artist-in-Residence Prize from viennacontemporary. Schawelka exhibitioned her work at several institutions and galleries in Europe and the US including the Kunstmuseum Stuttgart (Stuttgart 2021), the Goethe Institute (Paris 2018), the Kasseler Kunstverein (Kassel 2018), FILIALE (Frankfurt 2020 and 2022) and at Zeller Van Almsick (Vienna 2023). Her work primarily deals with different images and illusion while using photography, video and installations. She also questions the value of goods and consumption.
